tips and advice, that’s hard! before getting into the business side of things, i would suggest working on … you work! getting a strong body of work, creating a nice portfolio and then doing whatever you can to get yourself out there (social networks, blogs, etc) and then pursue selling and such. i think that “making it” doing your own work is hard, but if you have a strong voice and explore paths to show your work it can be fruitful.

I’m also hoping you could give me a bit of advice. I’m a recent grad working in theater as a freelance designer, and I’m considering making a career shift and pursuing art professionally (or at least, splitting my time between art and theater). So far, I know want to sell prints and cards/postcards as well as originals, but I haven’t figured out much beyond that and I have no idea where to start. Do you have any tips/advice? Anything from tips on choosing a printing method, to advice on how to put myself/my art out there, to things I need to consider before making the leap. Anything would help. How necessary do you think it would be to learn Photoshop? Or to take art classes?
